Visitors to events in Switzerland will be mesmerized for a few weeks each year by breathtaking sound and light animations made by diverse artists. Some of the light displays have been a part of the holiday season for many years; others have only recently begun; and some have already been discontinued. However, the course of events is also like this. So, to celebrate one such festivals the old Town of Murten will transform into a lighting display of extraordinary things over the course of 12 days. Visitors will be transported into a mystical and magical world by the artistic displays on the town’s towers, streets, and buildings.
The charming town of Murten will host this light festival from January 18 through January 29, 2023. Murten’s fifth Light Festival has already taken place in the start of 2020, surpassing previous records with more than 90,000 guests. It took a hiatus in 2021, but 64,000 people returned in 2022.
How is the festival celebrated?
The historic town of Murten and its surroundings are presented with a variety of light animations created by local and international artists during the light festival. Visitors can take an hour-long tour that includes the ultimate sound and light spectacular every evening.
The festival’s primary draws include projections on the school building in front of the Berntor, including work by light artists from “Spectaculaires,” a performance in the main lane, numerous works in the museum, and a light and sound display in the German Church. A poetic adventure is created when national, international, and regional artists display their animations and uplifting messages on various artefacts.

However, when in Murten there are several other amazing things that you should not miss! Numerous homes were built between the 15th and 18th centuries, and the town is encircled by ramparts dating back to the Middle Ages with a wall walk. The castle, lake, and Jura Mountains provide as a backdrop as you stroll along the wall today and take in the vista of Altstadt. The town’s castle was constructed in the 13th century by Duke Peter of Savoy. It is dark and menacing but nevertheless impressive, and from its interior courtyard—which is accessible for free—you can see the lake and the Jura foothills.
