It is not a secret why long-distance relationships do not work. They tend to collapse under the weight of constant video calls. A majority of them also fail because they are long-distance relationships. Yes, some couples make long distance work but they are very rare. So, here are the reasons why long-distance never works:

1.) Lack of communication: The first thing couples do when attempting long-distance is to set up a communication schedule. Suddenly, you have committed to talking on the phone every morning, texting through dinner, and doing video calls every night. Before you lay down a rigid chatting schedule, just make sure to remind yourself, how often you see each other when you are in the same city. A majority of the couples who do not even live together do not see each other every day. Even if they do, it is not often at the same time and in the same way. So, in that case, you will feel the urge to maximize communication to strengthen your bond. But, sometimes a few things can ruin your motive.

2.) Financial burden:

Love is not cheap. Even if you only live a few hours away from your better half, someone will spend an amount to see the other. The larger the distance, the larger the transportation charges. Also, if you spend every weekend, just meeting each other, you could be missing out on side money.

3.) There is a social life gap:

Nightlife is different for everyone. One partner might return from a long day of work exhausted and ready to talk, while the other wants to spend his after-work time going out. So, this is another problem you will face when you are in a long-distance relationship.

4.) Your surroundings change you:

Yes, we are loathed to admit it, but our surroundings change us. No matter how adamant we are to change, at some point in time, we change due to our peers or surroundings. And if anyone of you changes, the relationship changes, and things come to an end.

5.) Not having sex is another issue:

This is the elephant in the room. Everyone likes to have sex as often as possible and there are plenty of ways to address this issue sex. But no matter how you would handle it, you have to talk about it. Many couples opt for phone sex, marathon sexcapades, or erotic video sessions.

6.) Not willing to sacrifice for each other:

Sometimes your goals might pull you in different directions, so eventually, one person is going to sacrifice for others, or the bond will fade. If you are working in a creative area or working in Silicon Valley, then you leave your network to be with your partner once you have finished your work. So, a long-distance relationship involves a lot of sacrifices of your time and money.

7.) Your relationship is not progressing:

Either you have to move in or break up. Generally, that’s how long-distance work. And this point usually hits around the two or three-year mark, depending on how commitment-phobic the two of you may be. Also, in a long-distance relationship; you cannot increase intimacy, there is no way to connect your lives. Also, moving in is a big decision. If you do not take any of these steps, then you can keep a comfortable distance between you that allows for the denial of any incompatibility in your relationship.

8.) You will evolve apart:

You may have gone the long-distance route because you and your partner are at different stages of your career and life. For example, one of the most common long-distance scenarios is one partner is in college while the other works. It means that one person is living in a protected world, while the other is meeting the harsh realities of the world. Also, you cannot stop anyone from changing. So, in this case, it is crucial, to be frank with each other as to how you are evolving.

Being in a long-distance relationship changes you as a person and as a couple. But it is surely up to you and your efforts how to deal with all these issues.
