I can understand your situation. But the only way out is positive reinforcement. Anytime he makes the smallest effort, just compliment him and tell him how attractive your man is. Make it clear that you love what he is wearing and appreciate the effort he is doing. Anytime he wears his usual clothes, does not make any comments.
Simply reward the behavior you want to see repeated and ignore anything else. It takes time and you need not be consistent. This trick works, it is my personal experience.
