QUESTION

Hi Kiara,

We’re attending a beach wedding for four days with my girlfriend. Often, couples match their outfits for weddings and other occasions. Is dressing like a power couple supposed to match my partner’s style? Or do you think it’s better to just wear whatever you want, regardless of what others think?

Love,

James!

ANSWER

Hi James,

That’s a good question. And truth be told, many men have struggled with what to wear or what to match. Matching doesn’t necessarily mean wearing the same outfit. The goal of matching as a couple is to dress well as a couple. Whenever a couple goes out together or attends a public event, matching is necessary to look coordinated. But you shouldn’t match exactly unless you’re going to a Halloween party.

Children and twins look cute in identical outfits, but married couples don’t.

Instead, couples should focus on dressing at the same level.

So what does that mean?

Let’s say you’re at a wedding. Since a wedding is a more casual event, a woman may wear an ethnic dress. And a man should wear a tailored jacket, button-down shirt, trousers, and a necktie to match.

In other words, we don’t want the woman to show up in a stunning gown, and full make-up, while the guy shows up in a basic t-shirt and jeans.

Dressing at about the same level of sophistication is the end goal. Observe how your partner dresses and try to coordinate with them. To coordinate successfully, you will need a basic understanding of men’s dress codes and the opinion of your partner. Girlfriends are usually happy to help with this, and may even be grateful that you asked.

That’s all there is to coordination. As always, I hope this post was helpful to you.

Love,

Kiara!
