Hi Amanda,

How’s it going? I recently moved to a new apartment. Everything has been set up already, but I’m thinking of getting a dog. I was wondering if you could tell me what the best dog breeds are that are mellow, apartment-friendly, and won’t drive my neighbors batty?

Love,

Josie!

Hi Josie,

Wow, congrats. Now that you’re independent, you’re all set! Eventually, you’ll need a roommate when you move into your apartment – one who’s four-legged and furry. 😀 Well, I’ve got some exciting news. There are tons of dog breeds that don’t bark, making them perfect for apartments. Almost all dogs can, in fact, bark, but not all tend to do so.

So you don’t have to worry about your unpredictable dog annoying your sweet neighbors! I’ve gathered some quiet dogs that don’t bark much. Note: Breeds may differ in their quietness.

Apartment Friendly Dogs That Don’t Bark.

Greyhound: Is a great couch potato who does not like to exercise but loves to cuddle. In general, he is reserved when it comes to strangers.

Shar Pei: This 20-pound dog breed is loyal and independent as well as calm. A very adaptable dog who is content with a few short walks or well-suited to an active lifestyle.

Bernese Mountain Dog: Sweet, goofy, large, and always up for fun. Weekly brushing is necessary since they shed a lot.

Bulldog: If you aren’t bothered by snoring or keeping those adorable wrinkles clean and dry, this breed will enjoy brisk strolls and sitting by your feet. They’re typically a 30 lb dog in size but are good apartment dogs.

Italian Greyhound: Little will your neighbors know you own one of this 15 lb dog, thanks to its petite, delicate, and affectionate nature.

Basenji: Their larynx is shaped in such a way that they cannot bark. Although they can growl or yodel, this is a rare occurrence. In a Basenji, what’s not rare? Exercise is essential for them.

French Bulldog: A fun-loving breed with a quirky nature and strong sense of intelligence. The class clown of your building for sure.

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel: This breed is happy to hold court on the couch or take you for a walk. Don’t let them run off the leash despite their lapdog status since they have a hunting and scenting lineage.

Pug: This small dog is full of mischief and oozes personality despite its bulky body. Food and humans are their two favorite things.

Yes, we hope you enjoyed this roundup of happy apartment dwellers. Remember to give your dogs special attention; this will help them adjust to their new home in no time. And do not forget to tell me which breed of dog you brought.

Love,

Amanda
