You sometimes feel exceptionally motivated and excited to improve your dancing, feeling that you’re on the edge of your seat all of the time. However, you are too far from the nearest studio, can’t find classes on the dates you want, don’t have the necessary transportation, or can’t afford it.

Ugh, crap.

Dance classes and workshops aren’t always available at the drop of a hat whenever inspiration strikes. That doesn’t mean you have to give up dancing, though! Still, there are ways to participate!

Fortunately, you can improve your dancing anytime and anywhere, even in your living room. So, let go of all that stress and find out how you can learn dance from home in these six easy steps!

Steps to starting your in-home dancing:

Decide which style to use.

The first step is to decide what type of dance you want to learn. The dance world has a wide range of styles available, including ballet, jazz, hip hop, and couple’s dance like ballroom and salsa. If you decide what type of work you are interested in before you begin, you’ll have an easier time finding the most relevant resources.

Pick a technique or routine that works for you.

After that, you need to decide whether you are seeking to master a particular dance or basic technique. Nearly all dance styles share fundamental movements, which are repeated constantly by professional dancers to develop their strength, stamina, and abilities. If, however, you are learning purely for leisure, keep things minimal.

Search for the right video.

We are now in the process of finding your teacher, and that is a video. The internet has plenty of videos from professional dancers, teachers, musicians, and even amateur dancers that can help you learn to dance. Dancers who are just starting can find tutorials, tips, and classes on several websites, some of which have a fee and some don’t. Google “hip hop dance class” if you’re looking for a technique class, or search a specific dance name with the word “tutorial” if you’re looking to learn a particular dance.

Get warmed up!

The most important thing to do before you begin dancing is to warm up. You can increase your heart rate and warm your muscles by jogging in place. To loosen up, stretch your feet and hips by opening them wide. You all need some flexibility for most dance styles, so make sure to do exercises that stretch tight muscles.

Get the lesson done.

The time has finally come for the dance! Turn on that video; dance your heart out! You can use the remote control to pause or rewind your TV when you need to see a step again if you’re using a smart TV. Similarly, keep your phone or laptop close to you if you’re using one. If you’re having trouble mastering a step, practice it several times – some steps take a while to master. While practicing the moves, check in a mirror alongside your video to see how you perform.

Practice, practice, practice.

Keep practicing! To become an expert at something, you have to practice it ten times over! To get better at the dance, continue practicing with the same video and other videos from different teachers. Practice will make you better at it over time.

Some more tips to keep in mind:

  • Just get up and try. Sitting there and watching won’t work. You have to get moving.
  • A partner isn’t necessary. It is common for people to assume they need a partner to learn a partner dance, but in reality, they do not.
  • Make sure you watch the videos several times. Quite a few people find it hard to retain what they learned from the online video lesson. Learning to dance from home has the advantage of being able to play a video as many times as needed.
  • If you haven’t mastered the first steps of the video, don’t skip to the middle or end. To ensure you don’t miss anything, watch each video sequentially.
  • Dancers must feel and express the music. Learn the rhythm of your chosen dancing style by getting your hands on some tunes related to it and listening to them as often as possible.
  • When you dance, look up, not down. Many people start by looking at their feet when they learn a new dance. That’s natural but not advisable. The point of dancing is to feel, not to see.
  • Dance and relax. Don’t forget that dancing is supposed to be fun, not a chore. Rather than raising your blood pressure, you lower it by dancing.

Wait, what are you waiting for? Dancing is fantastic for so many things. Spend some time on your living room carpet practicing some cool move or technique that will blow the socks off your buddies. So get into the groove and amaze them!
