Hi Julia,
I hope you are doing good? I read your recent blog on Your guide to care for Bougainvilleas in pots, and honestly, I loved how you included a lot of details (from fertilizers to watering habits) in that blog! I am someone who adores flowers ( who doesn’t?), and whenever I see pretty flowers blooming by the streets, I wish to take them home. I know that might sound a little weird, but the anthophile within can’t help! And with the winters hitting all around, I wonder what my garden will look like without these colorful blooms. So, could you help me with some flowers that bloom through the harsh winters?
Love, Seline.
Hey Seline,
I will be more than happy to help you with this! And let me tell you this, you need not wait for the arrival of spring to treat your eyes with some pretty flowers. We usually associate winters with all the grays and blues and to everything harsh and cruel.
But there are many flowers and plants that can withstand extreme temperatures to put on a show and bring life to your cold days! Here are some flowers that bloom throughout the winter season.
Violas
These vibrant, charming little ‘faces’ are the perfect heart-melting sights on chilly mornings! These flowers spread their sweet-smelling blooms throughout the year in mild winter regions. They are much like Pansies, often seen as cousins to Pansies, but these are more tolerant of winters. People call them ‘johnny jumps up’ for producing a lot of seeds on their own and growing up continuously for years. Yes, they will pop up again in and around the place for at least a couple of years more!
Camellia

Another winter shrub that is also a favorite to most Southerners is the gorgeous Camellia. These flowers have exquisite blooms, mostly in the late winters up to early spring. Camellias bloom in a variety of beautiful colors that include blush pinks, whites, and reds. The only thing you need to remember here is to keep a check before picking up one for your garden. With a dozen of varieties available, you need to look out for the ones that bloom during the winters.
Winter Jasmine

We usually associate yellow with happiness, and very rightly so! These yellow Winter Jasmines are a perfect splash of happiness to a dull, gloomy winter day. Unlike other jasmines, these do not have fragrances. Yet, these tiny, starry blooms are striking enough for a wintry landscape. Also, they require quite low maintenance, and this makes them a favorite to lazy gardeners.
Pansy

Just like Violas, Pansies are here to stay during winters! These flowers are ideal for both spring and winter gardens. These flowers have overlapping petals shaped in the form of hearts, and they come in a wide range of bright colors and patterns. The best part about them is that they will bloom through extreme temperatures, and even if they wither down a bit, they stay alive to bloom again. So, you see them everywhere from early fall to late winters.
Cyclamen

The vibrant and uniquely shaped Cyclamen plants are common houseplants that mostly prefer mild climates. These bloom in beautiful shades of pink, purple, purple, and fuchsia. All these pretty colors are just the perfect ground cover for your garden.
Cyclamens love the winter sun and require a little maintenance from you. They will need you to water them properly and that too without over or under watering them. So, another thing that you will have to remember here is to provide proper drainage to the pots.
And there you have five gorgeous flowers to keep your garden all bright and lovely throughout the winter! I hope you enjoyed reading this blog, Seline.
Love,
Julia.
