QUESTION

Hi,

Petrica!

Winter is approaching Stockholm. And I like the fact that you have begun writing about winter lookbooks, and the inspirations are terrific. That is what I wanted.

I want to ask you something. I prefer conservative clothing, and I have trouble finding outfits that match my style: I usually wear knee-length skirts, long sleeves, and high collars. I also wear beanies to cover my hair and wear flat shoes.

Nothing I wear seems to work for me. I always look like I’m a grandmother no matter what I wear. Would you recommend something stylish yet sleek to wear? I do not want to become a bunch of bags when the winter sets.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Love,

Josie

ANSWER

Hi,

Josie

Thank you for always supporting and encouraging me. You’re right, of course. During the winter, it is essential to stay bundled up. Instead of looking cute, we all end up looking like we are in our sixties with fifty layers of bulk. Living in colder countries has taught me the importance of layering without sacrificing style.

It is best to start small with a tank top or t-shirt underneath everything. Adding that extra layer will keep you warmer than you could have imagined! Once that’s done, you’ll need to be a little creative.

I have compiled some outfit ideas below that incorporate three layers!

OPTION #1

Make sure you start with your base layer: your classic tee. Since you live in a colder climate, you should implement this layer in your wardrobe. Afterward, put on a long-sleeved tee. It gives the outfit a bit of dimension with this stripe. To top it off, opt for a sweater that’s oversized and still sports the print.

You can layer a pair of warm tights underneath high-waisted jeans for the bottom half of the look. You should complete the look with a well-fitted, quilted coat that is warm and stylish, especially when paired with ankle-high boots that feature faux fur lining (but make sure the bottoms have a firm grip if it’s icy or snowing outside!).

To top off your ensemble, throw on socks, mittens, and a stylish hat.

OPTION #2

Wear a t-shirt underneath if it is unbearably cold outside, as mentioned previously. Long button-down shirts look chic and casual when worn with a classic crewneck sweater. I suggest buying your button-down one size larger so that it peeks at all the edges, sleeves, and even the hem. Add some depth by selecting a plaid or printed button-down. Adding a leather motorcycle jacket as your final layer will provide you with a distinctive look. The moto jacket adds a little spice to the entire outfit, but you could also opt to do a regular winter coat.

OPTION #3

If you want to forgo a coat or jacket entirely, this is your best option. The first step is to choose a statement blouse. Any style will do; you can go flowy or fitted as you please. You can then add an unbuttoned chambray shirt. As your warmest layer, you should don an oversized cardigan that will drape over both shirts comfortably. Adding a blanket scarf in an accent color or printed pattern will give your outfit a polished finish.

I hope you’ll enjoy these styles. Which one was your favorite?
