QUESTION

Hi there,

Josie!

It’s been a while since I wrote. I hope you are doing well.

I have a question that might seem absurd, but I’m sure most of us fall into the same boat. I am a software engineer, which is quite challenging. My schedule is crazy these days, so I couldn’t find the time to organize my closet. I always experience a nothing-to-wear crisis whenever I attend any event.

Since I spend most of my day at my desk, I have stopped experimenting with different looks or styles. I read your blog on the same topic. But if you could provide me with some insight on how I can improve my wardrobe, that would be great!

Could you please advise me on anything?

Thank you so much!

ANSWER

Hi Miley!

Good to hear from you. I think this rings true to me! I had a hard time figuring out my wardrobe at the beginning.

Let’s see what we can do to spice things up a bit:

Before we start cleaning out your closet, I would like you to make a vision board. Sketch out your vision on paper.

What kind of image would you like to exhibit when you present yourself as your most powerful self?

With this, you will easily pull all the keys together to create a style that reflects your personality.

Assemble your Wardrobe

Sometimes, a quick clean and rejig is all we need to switch up the items that fill our closets. If you clear out some of the clutter that distracts from the clothes you love, you’ll have so much more freedom to wear what you love!

When you move your clothes into storage, it gives everything a fresh perspective.

Bring out all your seasonally appropriate clothing and put the last season’s stuff away. Take this opportunity to repair any items that have gotten damaged as well.

As an example, if moths have eaten your sweater, have it dry cleaned! If there are any holes in it, make sure to repair them.

Important: Invest in protective bags to keep the moths away from your clothing.

Sort Looks Into Outfits

After curating your pieces, it is time to begin putting them together into looks.

Depending on your schedule, you can do this at night, on weekends, or every day. I make sure that before I get into the shower, I plan out my outfit. It helps me set my intentions for the day.

With these three easy steps, you can create stunning looks. First, in addition to a basic top and bottom, you can add a jacket. As a second step, you could add fabulous poppy shoes. While as a third, you can experiment with patterns or color blocking.

Incorporate New Trends

An excellent way to get out of a style rut is by looking for current trends that you are interested in.

Girls are usually hesitant about incorporating new styles into their looks. Beginner’s tip: begin slowly. It’s not necessary to follow all trends at once. Pick ones that make you feel good about yourself.

A trend that may fit your needs is the wide-leg tie-front trouser, a perfect combination of comfort, lightweight, and flattering all at once.

One more over-the-top trend we’re seeing is animal print, which looks modern and stylish.

Be Yourself

While working from home, you have the opportunity to experiment with a new version of yourself. All in all, create an outfit that feels comfortable while also showcasing your unique style.

Find out which of your looks reflects your true self by experimenting with them.

For instance, without the constraint of wearing heels or straight skirts, you might be more inclined to show off your plush side — chunky knits, comfortable pants, or (maybe) not wearing much footwear.

If you choose colors, cuts, fabrics, and patterns that lift rather than discourage you, you will be able to mitigate negative feelings while uplifting positive ones.

When you’re feeling blue, seeing these colorful socks in striped patterns can lift your spirits. You feel instantly relaxed and comfortable.

Get rid of unwanted clothes

As a final step after moving away from your current rut, make sure you release things that don’t serve you anymore! Perhaps someone else can make use of them.

According to the saying, thank the pieces for the lessons they have taught you, and pass them on to others.

A sweater that I threw in the trash bag was just not suitable for me. There was nothing I could do to make it flattering. What did I learn from it? As soon as you receive the piece, style it to maximize its impact! After all, I won’t be sad that I didn’t utilize it to the maximum extent.

Hopefully, this will help you find out where you’ve fallen into a wardrobe rut and how to get out of it. If it is, please let me know!

Love,

Josie!
