If there is one thing essential for a rainy day, it is watching a great musical film. You simply cannot resist a good soundtrack and some dance numbers? Great music and a great movie go better together than bread and butter. And though not every film on this music list gets extracted from the critically acclaimed film canon, every person composing good music needs to be admired and celebrated. Because there is nothing like an iconic soundtrack to take a viewer to another era, bring a theatre full of strangers to tears or complement a narrative so well that one cannot get complete without the other. So, I am doling out ten movies that were made sweetly with good music.

1. DIRTY DANCING (1987)

It is an American romantic drama dance film.  Eleanor Bergstein wrote its screenplay. It stars Jennifer Grey in the lead role. She falls in love with a dance instructor Johnny Castle at a holiday resort. The musical team behind this romance drama rocked the Bible Belt back in the 80s. They had a good understanding of the silky soundtrack that sets the mood high. The songs ranked at number one on Billboard’s chart for months. The vibrant soundtrack created by Jimmy Lenner generated two multi-platinum albums. If you still have not watched this, then what are you waiting for? Just go and watch this musical film.

  2. THE BODYGUARD (1992)

   It is one of the best romantic thrillers to watch to date. Mick Jackson directed this romantic thriller. This movie grossed $411 million worldwide and became the second highest-grossing film of 1992. The film is just fun and nostalgic. The leads Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner are palpable. The music is pure honey. The Bodyguard soothing music is the biggest reason to hit play on this romantic thriller. The soundtrack of this film is so appealing that it has won the Grammy Award for Album of the Year.

3. WAITING TO EXHALE (1995)

It is an American romance film whose director is Forest Whitaker. The movie is an adaptation of the 1992 novel of the same name by Terry McMillan and casts. Its music composer was Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds. Its appealing soundtrack will forever define the era. This movie is a story about four women who are good friends. They get along, support one another, and listen to each other by venting out about their love and life. They want to be in love but face difficulties finding a good man.

4. Purple Rain (1984)

It is one of the iconic musical drama films starring Prince. Albert Magnoli directed the movie who; later handled PR for Prince. The film has Morris Day, Apollonia Kotero, and Clarence Williams III in the supporting roles, grossing $72 million worldwide. It won an Oscar for Best Original song score. People still remember Prince for this movie and the great soundtrack he has given in this film.

5. High Fidelity (2000)

It is an American romantic comedy-drama film. Stephen Frears directed this movie with great zeal and enthusiasm. Based on the 1995 British novel of the same name by Nick Hornby, this movie won hearts. The movie has a soothing soundtrack that will make you hear the songs on repeat. This film is about a music-loving man who tries to understand the reasons for his failures in relationships. The soundtrack has a legacy of its own. You will find the plot of the movie too relatable. With a good screenplay, this movie sets the bar high.

6. REALITY BITES( 1994)

It is an American romantic comedy-drama film directed by Ben Stiller. Helen Childress wrote the screenplay, and it has Winona Ryder, Stiller, and Ethan Hawke in the lead roles. Steve Zahn and Janeane Garofalo are in the supporting roles. The film shows Lelaina as an aspiring videographer working on a documentary called Reality Bites that talks about the disenchanted lives of her friends. The film takes you back to the 90s era, with its appealing soundtrack and a nostalgic story line. If you are a Winona Ryder fan, then you should not miss watching this.

It has a star cast of Taraji P. Henson, DJ Qualls, and others in supporting roles. Terrence Howard was Oscar-nominated for his lead role. The song “It’s Hard Out Here for a Pimp,” brought Oscar home. It is one of the best movies of 2005.

It is an American comedy-drama directed by Sean Baker. The movie stars Mya Taylor, Kitana Kiki Rodriguez, and James Ransone in the lead roles. The story highlights the life of a transgender. She later discovers that her boyfriend was cheating on her. This movie got shot with three iPhone 5S smartphones. You will delve deep into the vibrant soundtrack of this movie.

It is an American drama movie directed by Scott Cooper. It is an adaptation of the 1987 novel ‘Crazy Heart’ written by Thomas Cobb. The film highlights the life of a down-and-out country music singer who molds his life around after beginning a relationship with a young journalist.
